How to Work a Job Fair, continued
Of course in asking employers questions, you may find you’re not a good match for any openings they may have. Admit it to the employer. Say something like: “You know while I’m really interested in working for your company, I don’t know that I’m a good match for the openings you have right now.” Then ask: “Can I stay in touch with you in case something else comes open?”
One word of advice about following up: Use the telephone; don’t hide behind the computer and simply email. Internal recruiters may be getting hundreds of emails a day. That’s the easy, lazy way to communicate. Fewer job seekers are using the telephone so to distinguish yourself and continue establishing rapport, use the phone. Even leaving a voicemail is preferable to email. Using the telephone shows you are really earnest and interested. Plus every time the employer hears your voice and name, you are building awareness and hopefully rapport.
Networking is nothing more than getting and using information. It’s not an interview, so relax and consider your trip to a job fair a fact-finding mission and engage employers in a conversation. Knowledge is power and the more questions you ask, the longer you engage an employer in conversation, the better the impression you make. And more importantly the more memorable you are, because most job seekers don’t know how to work a job fair.
