Equalizer Award Honors Corporations for Diversity & Inclusion Initiatives
March 26th’s Career Bazaar & Hiring Fair will close from 11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for the day’s capstone event: The 2nd Annual Equalizer Awards Luncheon. Last year’s honorees were kept secret and revealed at the luncheon in an Oscar-like presentation. The “Oscar tradition” will continue this year in honoring area employers. However, the Urban League has announced that Tammy Edwards, Director of Inclusion and Leadership Development at Sprint Nextel, will receive an Equalizer Award for Individual Achievement.
In 2007, 275 luncheon guests watched as Sprint Nextel was honored with the first ever Equalizer Award. Saint Luke’s Health System and Blackwell Sanders Peper Martin, LLC were each presented with Working Toward Equality commendations for demonstrating significant progress in some areas of diversity and inclusion. The Equalizer Award for Individual Achievement was given to Margaret Evans, Ph.D., SPHR, director of Human Resources for the Government Employees Healthcare Association, Inc. (GEHA).
The Equalizer Award was established to recognize area employers for achievement in diversity and inclusion practices. It is part of an area wide Opportunity Compact to hasten social and economic parity and close equality gaps that persist between Blacks and Whites. The disparities are reported in The 2007 State of Black Kansas City Equality Index, which waspublished last December.
Gwen Grant, Urban League president and CEO, said: ““Even though the Equality Index shows that substantial improvement is needed to achieve equality in the area of employment, we believe that many corporations are taking steps in the right direction and we want to recognize those |
efforts. The Equalizer Award is the perfect way to do so, and bestowing it in conjunction with our Annual Career Bazaar & Hiring Fair makes perfect sense. I encourage all supporters of diversity and inclusion to attend the 2008 Equalizer Award Luncheon and celebrate employers that exhibit best practices.”
