State of Black Kansas City 2007

The Urban League of Greater Kansas City enjoyed full court press as it unveiled the 2007 edition of the State of Black Kansas City Equality Index on December 4, 2007 at the Hyatt Crown Center Hotel. The document was released to the media and public prior to the organization’s 50th Annual Difference Maker Awards Day Luncheon event held at the same location.

The Equality Index is a study of five major areas that most impact the success and quality of life in the Kansas City community: economics, health, education, social justice, and civic engagement. The document exposes unequivocal evidence that racial disparities exist between the lives of blacks and whites across Greater Kansas City, which included statistics from Johnson County this year.

Compared to the 2006 edition, there was little change in the report that measured progress and the equality gaps that continue to separate blacks and whites: blacks remain disadvantaged and little progress has been shown. Again this year, Urban League President and CEO Gwen Grant issued a challenge to businesses, decision makers, community leaders and individuals to help institute change in the disparities in the five areas of concern. more >>
