Difference Maker Awards Day Luncheon Recap (contd)

On December 4th, E. Frank Ellis, Chairman, Swope Community Enterprises and the Honorable James E. Clyburn, Majority Whip of the U.S. House of Representatives representing South Carolina, were honored as the 2007 Difference Makers.

Ellis was recognized for his enthusiastic and ardent work in helping develop the Swope Corridor in urban Kansas City, MO. Rep. Clyburn, the second African American to hold the post of Majority Whip in the House of Representatives, was honored for his long time career in public service and as a national role model in governmental affairs.

Also honored was Selchia Cain, a 14 year-old student at the Barstow School, who was awarded the first ever Emerging Leader Difference Maker Award by Urban League of Greater Kansas City president and CEO Gwen Grant.

Urban LeagueJohn Bluford, recipient of the 2006 Difference Maker Award, and his wife JoAnne Bluford, hosted a special Patrons Party at their home the evening before the annual luncheon. A myriad of guests, including luncheon honorees, and dignitaries attended the fete.

The Missouri Higher Education Loan Authority will also hold workshops on student loans and student loan forgiveness for students and parents. Bank of America, Commerce Bank and the United States Department of Education-Federal Financial Aid representatives will be on hand to assist students and their parents/guardians.

To be eligible for scholarship opportunities, students must bring a copy of their transcript, ACT/SAT scores (if available), and two letters of recommendation. “Students who wish to apply for a scholarship other than an academic type need to also bring a video/audio tape that demonstrates their field of interest,” said Dawn Hickman, Urban League director of Parent Education and Empowerment Division.
New this year in addition to the numerous colleges and universities represented is Simon’s Rock College, located in Massachusetts, the only four-year early college in America to accept 10th, 11th, and first semester 12th grade students.

The Infinite Scholars Program is the largest recruiter of minority students for college in Missouri. Founded by Thomas Ousley, the program is designed to enable many high school students to attend college for free.
